PALM BEACH, Fla. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park) scored with 13:52 remaining to break a 6-all tie and lift eighth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 19 Stevens Tech 8-6 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Delauney finished with a team-high three goals for her fourth hat trick of the season, helping Gettysburg finish 1-1 on its spring break trip to Florida. The Bullets (5-1) fell to top-ranked Middlebury 12-9 on Monday.
Jenn Kelly (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) scored twice and added an assist on Katie Ceglarski's (Darien, Conn./Darien) insurance goal with 5:05 remaining. Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, Md./Maryvale Prep) and Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) also found the net in the win.
Rebecca Quinn scored three times to lead the Ducks (5-1), who were held to nine shots while suffering their first loss of the 2005 season.
Leading 6-2 early in the second half, Gettysburg appeared to have the game in hand until Stevens Tech scored four goals in a little more than seven minutes to pull even. Kim Mirra's second goal of the day knotted the game at 6 with 18:47 remaining, the game's first tie since the opening minute.
But Delauney, who tallied a team-high eight game-winning goals a year ago, netted her second winner of 2005 with 13:52 left, finishing a solo run for a 7-6 Bullet lead.
The Gettysburg defense maintained the one-goal edge until Kelly set up Ceglarski down the stretch to seal the win.
Kelly keyed the Bullets' early success, scoring two of her team's first three goals to help Gettysburg build a 3-0 lead. Quinn put the Ducks on the board with 13:21 left in the half, but Zappacosta scored off a feed from Katie Lowe (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Moore struck unassisted to push the lead to 5-1.
Quinn's second goal pulled Stevens within three at halftime, but Delauney scored unassisted barely two minutes into the second half for a 6-2 edge.
Valerie Barnhart also scored for the Ducks while Stephanie Linder turned away 11 of the Bullets' 20 shots.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.
